Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) - Information and Advice
What does it mean to have SEND?
Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) can affect a child or young person’s ability to learn. They can affect their:
- behaviour or ability to socialise, for example they struggle to make friends
- reading, writing and maths
- ability to understand things or communicate their needs
- attention and concentration levels
- understand their feelings and emotions
- physical ability
Pupils can have SEND in one or more of the following areas:
- Receptive language/language comprehension
- Expressive language
- Developmental language delay
- Developmental language disorder
- Social communication/interaction
- Speech sound difficulties
- Mild and moderate learning difficulties
- Specific learning difficulty - Children experience difficulty in one area, e.g. reading, spelling, mathematics
- These may be temporary or long term and may affect the child's ability to learn.
- Children who experience social, emotional and mental health difficulties may also have additional difficulties.
- Hearing impairment
- Visual impairment
- Physical impairment
- Medical needs
