On Wednesday, Year 2 visited the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham to support with our Plants topic. The children had the best day exploring the park, holding some different animals and exploring the tropical greenhouses!

British Science Week competition

A huge thank you and well done to all of the children and families that took part in our science competition as part of British Science Week back in March.

This year's theme was all to do with change and adaptation and children from Reception to Year 3 took part in a competition to design a poster all about this theme. Years 4 to 6 took part in a competition set by the University College London, to create an invention to improve air quality.

Some of our entries were sent off to the national competition but unfortunately, we were not successful, however there is always next year. The children really showed their scientific knowledge and their creativity with the posters and inventions that were designed this year, well done.

Food Voucher Scheme - Important Notice - Summer & Christmas Holidays 2025

We’re pleased to confirm that school holiday vouchers for children in receipt of benefit-related Free School Meals will resume following the allocation of the council’s Household Support Fund funding for 2025/26.

Under the new arrangements, families will receive two vouchers – one in July 2025 to cover Easter and Whitsun holidays (backdated) and the six-week summer holiday (nine weeks at £10 per week = £90).

A second voucher will be issued in December 2025 to cover the October half-term (backdated) and the Christmas and February half-term holidays (four weeks at £10 per week = £40).

This is a reduction in the amount previously offered – from £15 per week to £10 per week – because this round of HSF funding is lower and is aimed at tackling different priorities. However, Sandwell Council remains one of the few local authorities to still offer these vouchers to support families during the school holidays.

Arrangements are now being made with our finance team to get these payments to schools in time for the first voucher to be issued before the summer holidays.

Please note, following the end of the Government’s transitional protection arrangements for means-tested Free School Meals ending at the end of a child’s school phase on 1 April, if a child’s eligibility for the vouchers ends when they finish primary or secondary school, they will only receive the summer voucher (not the Christmas voucher).
