We are becoming a Unicef UK Rights Respecting School!

Uplands Manor Primary School aims to be a school where children’s rights are at the heart of our ethos and culture, to improve well-being and to develop every child’s talents and abilities to their full potential. As part of this plan we are working towards recognition as a ‘Rights Respecting School’, an award given to schools on behalf of Unicef UK.

Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and young people and their rights. In 1989, governments across the world agreed that all children have the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). These rights are based on what a child needs to survive, grow, participate and fulfil their potential.

Uplands Manor pupils will learn about their rights by putting them into  practice every day. A Rights Respecting School models rights and respect in all its relationships.

We really hope that you will be able to support our school on our journey towards becoming a Unicef UK Rights Respecting School. It you would like to find out a bit more about the Convention on the Rights of the Child, then please visit unicef.org.uk/crc.

For further information about Rights Respecting Schools please visit: www.unicef.org.uk/rrsa

Parking and consideration for our neighbours and community

Last year I sent out a parking promise that the vast majority of the school community engaged with and signed up to. This was a positive way for us, as a school, to promote positive parking and driving around school.

Unfortunately, there continues to be a minority of parents who are parking dangerously or illegally around school - please make sure you report any vehicles that you see doing this so that we can pass on the registration details to the police to prosecute.

Also, last Friday, residents complained to school about the behaviour of parents on Thompson Road where there was a funeral carriage waiting for the family of a 9 year old boy who had died. Whilst I can understand frustration from parents dropping off at school if the road was obstructed, it does not excuse some of the rude comments made or dangerous driving that followed. I have had to write a letter of apology to the family concerned on behalf of the school community.

Please can I thank those parents who continue to park and behave in the right way around school and ask those that have not done so to reconsider their actions in the interest of the safety of our children and respect for those living in the local area.
